As part of a Canadian furniture store chain, I designed a system to enhance logistics management. This streamlined solution empowers the logistic manager to efficiently assign and track delivery orders. It provides real-time visibility into delivery drivers' work status and location, aiding in optimal assignment based on proximity to pickup and delivery locations.

Goals of the project

Optimize Delivery Assignment: Enable managers to assign new orders to delivery drivers based on their real-time location, ensuring faster and more efficient deliveries.

Real-Time Driver Tracking: Provide live location tracking of delivery drivers to monitor progress and improve route planning.

Driver Availability Management: Allow managers to see which drivers are on the road and who are off-duty for better workforce planning.

Improve Delivery Efficiency: Reduce delays and optimize logistics operations by allocating orders to the nearest available driver.

Enhance Visibility & Control: Offer a centralized dashboard for managers to oversee all delivery operations in real time.

Contextual inquiry

To truly understand the challenges faced by the logistic manager in their daily work, I knew I needed to dive into the real-life setting – the furniture warehouse. I went on-site and had a chat with the manager and the team to grasp the context of the work environment and to uncover any difficulties they might be experiencing.

The outcome of the contextual inquiry

Here's what I found during my time at the furniture warehouse, talking to the logistic manager and the team. A few things stood out:

  • Delivery management isn't as smooth as it could be, causing some targets to be missed because of the system.

  • The warehouse is a busy place, and the logistic manager needs a system that's quick and easy to use for managing deliveries.

  • Right now, they're manually keeping track of the drivers' work time, and it's a bit tricky for them to follow real-time locations and assigned tasks. We're aiming to make things simpler and more efficient for them

Task Analysis

  • I looked closely at how the logistic manager manages the delivery system every day. I broke down their tasks, like managing delivery orders, to understand each step. This helped me see how efficient and easy-to-use the system is and find any problems. By doing this, I learned a lot about how the manager works with the system, making sure any changes we make fit well with their way of working. The main aim was to make tasks smoother, improve how easy the system is to use, and make the whole experience better for the logistic manager in their busy work environment.

  • Inefficient Order Fulfillment : Difficulty in completing delivery targets due to system inefficiencies.

  • Poor Driver Tracking : Challenges in accurately tracking the real-time location and activities of delivery drivers.

  • Confusing Task Assignment : Managerial confusion when assigning new delivery tasks, impacting task efficiency.

  • Lack of Order Organization : Difficulty in accessing and organizing a comprehensive list of orders based on their status.

  • Absence of Nearby Driver Information : Lack of visibility into nearby drivers and their distances from customer addresses during task assignment.

  • Missing Driver Communication Features : Absence of direct communication tools, such as chat or call options, within the system.

  • Limited Search Functionality Challenges : in quickly searching for orders by customer name or order number directly from the home page.

Potential solutions

Track delivery drivers in real-time, see what they're doing, and change their tasks if needed.

  • Show a list of all our orders and sort them by how far along they are.

  • Give a list of all our drivers and sort them by who's on-duty and who's off-duty.

  • Share contact info for drivers, let the manager chat, or call them right from the system.

  • Help the manager find nearby drivers and see how far they are from the customer's place when he assigns a task.

  • Highlight pending tasks on a separate page and remind the manager about them the next day.

  • Let the manager search for an order using the customer's name or order number right from the home page.

I utilized the card sorting method to structure the information architecture, ensuring efficient navigation and optimal placement of content. By categorizing and organizing user-generated data, I guaranteed that each page contained the relevant information, enhancing user experience and usability.
